COMMAND AND PROHIBITION

Gunakan Verb 1 ( kata kerja bentuk 1 ) untuk mengungkapkan kalimat perintah ( Command ). Contoh :

 Sit down, please.
 Go straight !
 Go away !
 Stand up !
 Jump over !

Prohibition ( Kalimat Larangan ) biasanya menggunakan kata “Don’t” di awal kalimat.

 Don’t talk, please.
 Don’t sleep here, please.
 Don’t cheat.
 Don’t come late.
 Don’t open your book.
 Don’t make a noise, please.
 Don’t close the door, please.

TRANSACTIONAL AND INTERPERSONAL

There are two kinds of dialogs that you need to know. They are transactional and interpersonal dialogs.

A transactional dialog is a dialog that you need to do if you want to get something done. For example : to get chicken sate, you need to speak to a sate seller. If you don’t, you get hungry.

An interpersonal dialog is a dialog that you simply because there is somebody around you. You talk for the sake of talking (“basa-basi”). So, it can be chatting, gossiping, etc.

Showing Agreement And Disagreement

Study the following expression that show agreement.

1. Sure
Waiter : “Could you possibly move to a table near the window?”
Susanti : “Oh, yes, sure.”

2. By all means
Susanti : “The table is dirty. Could you clean it?”
Ani : “By all means.”
3. I approve of it
Kurnia : “Do you mind contributing one thousand rupiahs?”
Waiter : “No. I approve of it.

4. That’s good idea
Lukman : “Shall we have a drink?”
Maryana : “That’s a good idea.”

5. That’s fine
Sugiharti : “I’m going to wear this dress to the party. What do you think, Nani?”
Nani : “That’s fine.”

6. That sounds like a good idea
Anton : “How about having dinner at the restaurant?”
Emma : “That sounds like a good idea.”

7. I’d be glad
Dianti : “Would you like to come to my party?”
Yudith : “I’d be glad to.”

8. I’m in favour of it
Widi : “How about buying a flower vase, I think Dianti likes it.”
Kurnia : “I’m in favour of it.”s


Note :

Expressing an agreement :

• I do agree.
• I think so.
• That’s right/true/ correct.
• I’m with you.
• Yeah / yup ( informal ).
• I can’t agree more.
• I’m in complete agreement with you ( formal / official ).

Expressing a disagreement :

• I ( totally ) disagree.
• I can’t agree with …
• I don’t think so.
• That’s not true / right.
• No way !
• Not a chance!
• I see what you mean, but …
• That may be true, but …

Example :

Doni : I think we will start the fund raising next month.
Leo : Sorry, I disagree with you. Don’t put off until tomorrow what we can do today.
Doni : All right, then. Let’s start with selecting the committee members.

THANKING / GRATEFUL

Biasakan untuk mengucapkan terima kasih kepada orang lain ketika kita mendapatkan kebaikan meski sekecil apapun.
Berikut ini contoh cara mengucapkan terima kasih dan responnya.

Budi : Can I borrow your dictionary ?
Ita : Here you are .
Budi : Thank you !
Ita : You’re welcome.


‘Thank you’, Thanks atau Thank a lot’ digunakan untuk menyatakan terima kasih.
Untuk menjawab ucapan terima kasih, kita gunakan :
You’re welcome.
Don’t mention it.
Not at all.

Mita : Hello Reza, nice to meet you.
Reza : Hello Mita, nice to meet you, too.

Notes :
“How do you do?” digunakan untuk salam pertemuan pertama kali dan belum saling kenal sebelumnya.

“What’s your name ?” digunakan untuk menanyakan nama seseorang.

Asking personal information giving personal information
What’s your name? My name is Ismail. Atau I am Ismail.
Where are you from ? I am from Yogyakarta.
Where do you come from ? I come from Yogyakarta.
Where do you live ? I live in Yogyakarta./ I live at Jl. Kaliurang no 12 Yogyakarta.
